CHAPTER 16

This had to work, at least they hoped.

As the final police car rolled away from Damon's elegant, albeit now infamous, residence, Chief Detective Powell stood, the epitome of focus and determination, in the study. It was a room that spoke of wealth and secrets, now ransacked by unknown assailants.

The housekeeper, a woman whose eyes held the weight of unspoken stories, approached him with a card, its message hastily scribbled in pencil, a tangible whisper of the chaos that had unfolded. Evidently, someone wanted to see him, and the housekeeper knew to keep it discreet.

"Show the lady in," Powell instructed, his voice carrying the authority of his badge, his eyes not leaving the chaos of the room as if the answers might reveal themselves in disarray.

"There's someone with her," the housekeeper hesitated, a note of caution in her voice as if the addition of another person might tilt the world on its axis.

"Let them both in," Powell relented with a sigh, the curiosity in his eyes betraying his stoic exterior. He straightened his jacket, a silent preparation for the unknown.

Claudia Nelson made her entrance, a vision of determination and grace under pressure, with a companion who could only be described as a walking, talking enigma. The gentleman, if one could call him that without a trace of irony, was an amalgamation of eccentricities. His black frock coat, a relic from another era, hung on his frame like a reluctant companion. His hat, battered by the many storms it had witnessed, seemed to be contemplating escape from his awkward grasp, along with a gingham umbrella and a lone glove, each item a testament to his disheveled existence.

"This is Mr. Stewart," Claudia announced with a flourish, presenting her companion with the same pride one might show off a rare artifact. "Jack's private tutor. A man of considerable intellect and...unique fashion sense, who has untangled the web of the pink diamond stopper mystery. We're here for insights into Damon's abrupt...departure."

"Tutor, eh? What kind of tutor?" Powell, a man accustomed to the unpredictable dance of criminal investigation, found Claudia's trust in Mr. Stewart both baffling and intriguing. Claudia's disdain for Damon was no secret, a fiery narrative that added layers to the unfolding mystery.

"The type of tutor that may have the answers we seek," said Claudia matter-of-factly.

Claudia leaned in closer, her eyes wide with anticipation. "Tell me everything, Chief Detective."

Powell straightened, his gaze momentarily distant as if visualizing the tale he was about to unfold. "It all began with Damon, fresh off the rollercoaster of a courtroom drama involving Gabe and Walters. You'd think the man would want a break, but no, he heads straight to his study. Solitude and silence, or so he thought."

As Powell painted the scene, Claudia imagined the stately quiet of Damon's study, a contrast about to be shattered. Powell paced slowly, his footsteps a soft echo on the Persian rug, each step a beat in the story's rhythm.

"Our housekeeper, bless her; she's the one who gave us the lowdown. Picture this: the house, a beacon of calm, suddenly erupts.
